Brightwaters is a village in southwest part of the town of Islip, which is in western Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 3,248 at the 2000 census. Brightwaters is a suburb of New York City.

Geography

Brightwaters is located at (40.721442, -73.265869)[1]. It contains Wohseepee Park and the Brightwaters Canal. Also there are four lakes next to Montauk Highway, and the businesses are located at the intersection of Windsor Avenue and Orinoco.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.0 square mile (2.6 km2), of which, 1.0 square mile (2.6 km2) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km2) of it (3.88%) is water.

Brightwaters residents are served by the Bay Shore School District, and have a ZIP code that is distinct from the Bay Shore Postal District.

Demographics

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 3,248 people, 1,127 households, and 912 families residing in the village. The population density was 3,299.2 people per square mile (1,279.7/km²). There were 1,144 housing units at an average density of 1,162.0 per square mile (450.7/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 95.23% White, 1.57% African American, 0.06% Native American, 1.29% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.65% from other races, and 1.14% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.06% of the population.

There were 1,127 households out of which 38.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 71.8% were married couples living together, 6.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 19.0% were non-families. 14.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.87 and the average family hi size was 3.20.

In the village the population was spread out with 27.3% under the age of 18, 5.0% from 18 to 24, 28.8% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 93.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.7 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $88,556, and the median income for a family was $102,986. Males had a median income of $60,035 versus $49,107 for females. The per capita income for the village was $36,693. About 0.8% of families and 1.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 0.7% of those under age 18 and none of those age 65 or over.
